Delta E

Delta E

The value Δ E (Delta E) indicates the distance between two colours in the Lab colour space. There are various formulas for its calculation: CIE 1976, CIE 1994, CIE 2000, CMC. On a global level, Δ E 2000 (Δ E according to CIE 2000) is gradually gaining acceptance since, in all colour ranges, this value corresponds best to the difference perceived by the eye.

In the USA, Δ E is still often determined according to CMC (Color Measurement Committee). One should always indicate the calculation basis. Whereas the formula according to CIE 1976 only calculates the physical distance between the two colour points, the other, more complex formulas try to do greater justice to the colour perception of the human eye.
