Using state-of-the-art wax or wax/resin-qualities, a thermal printhead is designed to run for 50,000 metres and more. Frequent use of resin qualities (high printing temperatures!) may reduce printhead life.

Printhead pressure too high.
Printer and printhead are neither cleaned sufficiently nor on a regular basis.
Clean printhead every time you change ribbon and/or label material.
Disproportion of label width and ribbon width.
Frequent or steady use of uneven label substrates like holograms or very thick substrates, both grinding down the print head steadily at the same place.
