Bad, what's bad?
Probably every company taking part in the thermal transfer business will have received feedback from annoyed customers telling them, mostly over the phone: "The ribbons are bad!" To find a solution, it is of utmost importance to scan the endusers' descrition of the problem for its real cause.
The list below gives only a few of the problems that may occur. It shows the most common problems, their probable cause and appropriate corrective actions.
- TEC-printer displays »No ribbon« although the ribbon is loaded.
- Ribbon is too thick
- Ribbon is too wide
- Core has no notches, but printerneeds them to transport ribbon
- Ribbon shifts on the core while being loaded in the printer and "telescopes"
- The core has the right size but the ribbon is not positioned correctly.
- Printer cannot be switched online
- No printout
- Repetitive voids in printed areas in printing direction
- Greyish, translucent printout
- Ribbon is fusing
- Poor edge definition
- Incomplete characters; incomplete printout
- Uneven print throughout the width of the label
- White streaks in printing direction
- White spots or non-printed areas
- White, often diagonal streaks
- Sickle-shaped white voids
- Ink peels off
- Printing elements appear to be "crammed" together in vertical direction and interrupted by small lines. Print changes from grey to black.
- Print misses out on the inner side of the label
- Ribbon tears off
- Excessive noise during printing
- Premature printhead failure
- Printer does not stop at the end of the ribbon
